I read an article in our local paper. I filled out paper work 1 year ago and have not heard a thing back. I lost my house due to the reccession, lost my business, among other things.
In the paper it read we had to have paper work in by this Thursday 8/13/12 or we did not qualify for anything. I hope its the paper work I have already filled out. If not, The economy and Goverment got there way again,by hurting the middle class resident. If you know a person to get a hold of to do other paper work, please send it my way .... For my whopping $2000.oo on my 200,000.00 repossed house. Thanks A Lot Brenda

Your post (and some of the comments) represent the unhappiness and disappointment that many felt with the settlement. There certainly will be many who will be justifiably angry with only a $2,000 check after having endured a foreclosure, but these victims have retained their right sue. The abuses detailed in the complaints from the attorneys general should help families earn additional compensation through class action lawsuits.

Thanks, Bill. I agree that it is misery to see this kind of settlement. It erodes hope that there will be any justice for those most hurt by this economic collapse. I've never seen a settlement that made me so bothered.

I cannot imagine how every attorney general in the United States would approve of this deal. I cannot even imagine why any DEAL should have been struck at all. The attorneys general should have taken the banks to court with a $500 billion suit and kept at the suit until the courts awarded the damages. No deals!

It is like the entire justice system is so in bed with the banks that every AG in every state wanted to give the banks an easy pass. Does the deal even require that the banks return the money they made from selling homes they illegally foreclosed on? Not that I can see in any articles I've read. That's unconscionable. The banks forged signatures and repossed homes that, in some cases, were not even in arrears on payments. Then they sell the house for $180,000, keep the $180k, yet the government says the only thing the banks owe to those owners is $2,000 for misbehaving!

I wonder if the government would let someone who robbed a bank of $180,000 keep the money while paying only a $2,000 penalty to the bank for his crime. This, more than anything I've seen so far, shows how deeply in sympathy with the banks the governments throughout this nation are with big money. It appears the banks even got to keep the merchandise they snatched and merely had to pay the homeowner's moving expenses!

With this settlement as precedent, all banks should forge documents and foreclose without checking over the paperwork, because -- even if they're wrong -- the precedent here seems to say that they can keep the house anyway.

I like the mix of rage and humor in this comprehensive piece. Some great insights, like Obama preparing for another round of bailouts, the common law premise that our signature is our bond being totally demolished, and lines like "We can blame the downfall of the entire global economy largely upon the fraudulent activity at the center of this class-action suit." I wish I could say this article made me feel better, but it's nice to have some company in the misery.
